Welcome to Aunt Nana's Words of Wisdom
Dear Aunt Nana,

I'm in the middle of a serious legal battle and although I've been with my current lawyer for several years, I just feel like he's not doing the best job for me.  He doesn't seem to be excited when we win our court cases and he doesn't seem to give any kind of encouragement about future court cases.  I feel like I should change lawyers, but how do I go about doing that?  I feel like I'm being a bit disloyal.
Can you steer me in the right direction?

Sincerely,

Legally Confused in Lincoln
Dear  Legally Confused in Lincoln:

Being with a lawyer for several years does not loyalty make.  As with any relationship, even professional, there is a definate shelf-life.  It may be that the shelf-life of your professional life with your current lawyer is long past expired.

What you need now is a "fresh horse."  Someone you feel will support you and not just pay lip service and collect your money at the same time.

Everything counts in the courtroom; the vibes, how people behave, how they look, everything.  It's a chess game, and because it is a "game," (don't be offended by that, every good lawyer will admit to it being a game...just a very serious one) everyone needs to be "on top of their game."

Now, how to go about finding another lawyer.

* Know what kind of lawyer you need;

* How much are you willing to pay for a lawyer;

* Interview as many or as few as you feel you need to in order to find someone you feel will take your case seriously.  Use the 30 minute free consultation with those lawyers to your advantage;

* Once you hire a new lawyer, he or she will be in contact with your previous lawyer;

* If you are not sure where to look for a new lawyer, start with the yellow pages for your city, or contact the local Bar Association for your area.

Good luck!

Aunt Nana
